LVVP Volunteer Projects

Our International volunteer projects generally fall under five main categories: community development, education, health, environmental conservation and sport and leisure. By volunteering in Zambia, you may learn a new language or experience a new culture and way of life. Throughout the duration of your stay in Zambia you will be assisted by the experienced LVVP staff members on a day to day basis.

Environmental Conservation Volunteer Project

This volunteer project is based in the Victoria Falls World Heritage Site. The Victoria Falls were declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1989. The waterfalls are one of the biggest in the world. The Victoria Falls Rainforest which is part of the Falls ecosystem has been invaded by Alien Invasive plants. LVVP works with the responsible government agencies in removing the invasive alien plants and keeping the site clean. LVVP also raises awareness about the dangers of these plants in schools and the community and how to control the spread of invasive plants. Volunteers will carry out work in removing lantana camara and other plants from the rainforest. They will also assist in carrying out biological monitoring in designated plots in the rainforest. LVVP volunteers will carry out environmental education sessions in selected schools in rural and urban areas.

Wildlife Conservation Program

The Mosi Oa Tunya National Park in Zambia falls under the Department of National Parks and Wild Life Management Agency. The park has wildlife ranging from elephants, lions, Zebras, Giraffes, antelopes, buffalo and Rhinos. LVVP volunteers will work with department staff members in keeping the park clean, maintenance of water facilities and roads.

LVVP volunteers will also be involved in monitoring wildlife movement, responding to human wildlife conflict and anti conducting anti poaching activities in the park. This project also involves conducting wildlife education sessions in schools and the community.

Educational Support Volunteer Project

The education system in Zambia is still developing and a lot needs to be done to improve the standards, especially in rural areas. LVVP believes that education is key to the development of any community. There is therefore a need to invest in the education of children and youths. However most schools do not have adequate resources for teaching and learning. They are also ill equipped in terms of the number of qualified teaching staff. LVVP volunteers work with selected vulnerable schools in urban and rural communities by providing learning and teaching materials and at the same time working with local teachers in teaching children English, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Sport, Geography and other relevant subjects)

A warning to Volunteers: The classes in Zambia are big and sometimes go up to 60 children per class. You will need energy to control them but you will enjoy this experience.

Cultural experience Volunteer project

LVVP believes in inter cultural exchange and interaction because of the rapid rate of globalization and the inter connectedness of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is important for people to learn and appreciate each other‘s cultures. Through this volunteer project, LVVP volunteers work with local traditional leaders to understand local cultures. The volunteers are placed in both rural and urban host homes where they experience the REAL life in Zambia. LVVP volunteers will live in the Mukuni Cultural Village or the Chief Sekute village during their stay in Zambia. This is a good volunteer project for students studying languages, social sciences and anthropology from universities around the world. Volunteers are encouraged to contribute by writing about some aspects of the community where they will be placed.

Please note that. The living conditions in the rural areas are very basic, different but very fulfilling and special in their own way.

Sports Development Volunteer Project

Many children and youths in the communities where LVVP is operating have very little opportunities for developing their sporting skills. This is due to limited sporting facilities and resources for use by youths and children both in and out of school. Volunteers with a passion for sports, work with children and youths in schools and the community in engaging them in various sporting disciplines. This will take place during weekends and selected week days when children are allocated time for them to take part in sporting activities. Volunteers donate sporting equipment to schools and participate in teaching children skills in soccer, tennis, basketball, cricket, rugby and other sporting activities identified by the schools. Children and youths also share the indigenous games that they play with volunteers. LVVP takes advantage of such sporting activities to talk to young people and children about HIV/AIDS, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Climate Change and COVID 19.

Medical and Health Volunteering Program

LVVP works with the Ministry of Health in improving health education awareness in urban and rural health centres in Livingstone and Kazungula districts. LVVP Volunteers work with local health officials in teaching and raising awareness about nutrition, family planning, HIV/AIDS, water and sanitation and sexual and reproductive health. The target here is children below 5 years, pregnant and lactating mothers, HIV/AIDS care givers, young mothers and school children. Volunteers are placed in rural health centres where they work with local community health workers in carrying out health education and monitoring. Volunteers are advised to stick to requirements provided by the Ministry of Health.

Religious Missionaries Volunteer Project

This project is for volunteers who would like to work with local religious organisations and churches in carrying our missionary work in both rural and urban areas.
